New Clio Cup continues a long line of motor racing championships in the UK for competition spec versions of Renault’s popular road car models.
It all started in the Seventies with a championship for leaning, squealing Renault 5 TLs and TSs before these were replaced in the Eighties by huge grids of 5 GT Turbos.
The early Nineties saw the birth of the first Clio Cup (used the model’s 16v 1.8 version) until 1996 when a championship for Renault’s Sport Spider sportscar was introduced.
In 2000, Clios returned using the ‘Gen 1’ 172; this in turn being succeeded by the 182, 197, 200 and 220 Trophy models.
The impact has been remarkable and that’s without mentioning the successes that the manufacturer has also had in the UK with its single seater Formula Renault category and teams in British F3, British Touring Cars and British Rallying.
In short, Renault has has in the past 40 years very possibly contributed more than any other manufacturer to motorsport in the UK.
In 2020 that legacy continues with the all new Clio Cup UK category using Renault Sport Racing’s latest fifth generation Clio Cup race car.
