New Clio Rally excels on gruelling debut

Renault Sport Racing's brand new Clio Rally '5' has excelled on its first competitive outing - the World Rally Championship's round in Mexico.

Five cars built at RSR's legendary workshops in Dieppe, France had been shipped out for the event, one of the most gruelling on the WRC calendar.

Rally Mexico takes place at close to 3,000 metres above sea level and has some notoriously rough mountain gravel stages which include punishing water splashes.

But with nine months of development and more than 10,000 kilometres of testing, New Clio Rally passed with flying colours.

Not only did the car's build stand up to the punishing conditions of the stages, but its 16-valve 1330cc TCe 4-cylinder engine also coped with the added strains of competing at such high altitude.

New Clio Rally is available to order for competition in the UK from official Renault Sport importer R.Sport.

In the end in Mexico, it was locals Gerardo Rejón/Mauricio Pimentel who emerged as the top Clio Rally crew.

New Clio Rally's successful competitive debut followed its first public appearance as a course car on January's opening WRC round, Rallye Monte Carlo.

Pending the Coronavirus situation, car is expected to be seen in increasing numbers later in the year competing on events in mainland Europe.

Benoît Nogier, Renault Sport Racing Commercial Racing Director, reflected: "New Clio Rally made an extremely positive competitive debut on one of the most demanding events in the world.

"Rally Mexico provides a proper test for the cars with rough gravel roads, high altitude and extremely high temperatures. This edition was no exception.

"All the cars suffered greatly, but the reliability of New Clio Rally proved to be excellent as we only identified one minor electrical problem on one car.

"The performance was also there, the five crews being consistently ahead of the R2s and mixing it up with the best R5s on the short urban super-specials.

"This rally was ideal for targeting where improvement can be made, but we are now extremely confident about the quality, relevance and potential of our car.

"Having five cars in Mexico also highlights the commercial success and international interest generated by New Clio Rally and we would like to include our official distributor in Mexico, RallyMex, in this successful debut."
